Almost Home

Growing up, there was no shortage of excuses to get together with my extended family. A trip to a nearby hill station or a relaxed day at my father’s farmhouse was the ideal choice for a get together. We were always looking for excuses to meet and even silly things like my aunt buying a new refrigerator or me being appointed the school prefect would become good enough reasons for a celebration. These experiences were made up of moments of love, laughter and happiness and became an integral part of my definition of ‘home’. Moving 7,099 miles away, I’m distanced not just physically but also psychologically from these experiences. Though connected by technology, a video call serves as an empty reassurance and more often than not is a shrewd reminder of the distance between us. To fill the void created by this absence, I self-indulgently created a space through which I can relive those experiences. A space that allows and aids reminiscence. A space that isn’t home but ‘Almost Home’.
