Heirlooms are reservoirs of memory and owning one gives you access to a rich past of family history. Through this work, I took it in my hands to manage the expectations of history and change the narrative of an heirloom. In India, sarees are passed down through generations of women; I received one from my mother-in-law. It was overwhelming to obtain an object of such value. In addition to the physical weight, it carried the psychological charge of the history and traditions that were woven into the fabric. Through the process of arm-knitting I was able to recontextualize the significance of the saree while preserving its essence. The arm knitting is held together by two knots, which is true to the essence of the saree – there are no stitches when it is worn. The work can be undone and redone and embodies scope for future iterations.
